In it to win it

ORCHARD PARK – The scene at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Tuesday during high school football Media Day was similar to what it looked like just a year ago.

At the scoreboard end of the stadium stood the Fredonia Hillbillies. Loose as can be, the Hillbillies attempted field goals and waited for members of the media to ask questions about Saturday’s Section 6 Class C championship game.

At the 50-yard line stood Cleveland Hill. With a business-as-usual like approach, head coach Glen Graham and the leaders of the Golden Eagles stood.

Both Fredonia and Cleveland Hill were at the same place last year as Saturday’s game at 1 p.m., at Ralph Wilson Stadium will be a rematch of the 2012 Section 6 Class C championship game in which the Golden Eagles prevailed, 22-20.

“It’s a fun experience,” Fredonia coach Mike Marshall said. “I told the guys to come in here and enjoy it. They were looking forward to this.”

While both teams are looking forward to Saturday’s rematch, both coaches couldn’t help but reflect on last year’s nail-biter.

“Last year’s game was a battle,” Graham said. “(Both) teams had a great opportunity to win. We were fortunate to come out on top. I’m sure it’s a motivator for Fredonia coming into this game.”

“The boys were talking about how bitter it was to lose by just two points,” Marshall said of his team. “We can’t wait to get that one back.”

Fredonia was represented by Matt McCarthy, Nick Johnston, Weston Ley, Cody Smith and Dylan Meyer.

Also at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Tuesday was Maple Grove/Chautauqua Lake as it will take on Randolph in the Class D championship game Friday at 6 p.m.

The two met earlier in the season, with the Cardinals prevailing, 35-7.
