John F. Regan
GOWANDA – John F. Regan, age 88, of Maple Ave. passed away Friday Nov. 8, 2013 at the Mercy Hospital Buffalo.
Born May 31, 1925 in Yonkers, NY, the son of Dennis and Mary (Sweikert) Regan.
A United States Veteran John honorably served his country with the United States Navy, he served during WWII.
John married the former Virginia M. Madden on Sept. 4, 1948, they were married in the St. Peters RC Church in Yonkers, NY, Virginia passed away August 16, 2001.
A 1950 graduate of St. Bonaventure, John received his masters in social work at the University of Buffalo. He began his Social Work career with Baker Hall at the Father Baker Facility in Lackawanna, NY more commonly known as Baker Services, he retired from the former Gowanda Psychiatric Center in 1990 after more than 30 years of social work. John was a member of St. Joseph’s RC Church Gowanda and in his early years served on various boards and committees. He loved the sport of baseball and was a devoted coach for Gowanda’s Little League. He was head coach for the Ashland Service Station Team along with the VFW Post 5007. He coached for 13 years and took the VFW team to an undefeated season. John also served on the Gowanda Ambulance Board and was a life member of both the American Legion Post 409 and the James Cruden VFW Post 5007 both of Gowanda.
Survivors include seven children Mary P. Regan, Dennis P. (Suzanne) Regan, Mark P. Regan, Kevin M. (Carol) Regan and Timothy J. Regan all of Gowanda, Justin E. (Val) Regan of Thornton, CO and Eileen A. (R. Joseph) Dibble of King George, VA, grandchildren Justin, Kelly, Anne, Kathleen, Brian, Michelle, Thomas, Molly, Tristan and Ian, great grandson Luke, a brother Eugene Regan of Yonkers, NY, a sister Margaret Chrapowitzky of High Pointe, NC, along with several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife John was preceded in death by a brother Justin T. Regan (Dec. 19, 2002) and a sister Mary Alice Regan (Nov. 29, 2006).
Friends may call at the SCHINDLER FUNERAL HOME, 44 Center St. Go-wanda, NY 532-4200. from 3 to 8 p.m. on Monday (Veterans Day) Nov. 11, 2013. John’s funeral will be held Tuesday Nov. 12, 2013 at 10 a.m. where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Joseph’s RC Church, 90 East Main St., Gowanda (assemble at church). Interment to follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery Gowanda. Fr. Joseph Porpiglia celebrant.
