Twenty years ago – 1993

With over $175,000 raised in a $500,000 capital campaign, Patterson Library in Westfield is moving closer to achieving barrier-free accessibility for the 85-year-old facility. The building project includes a new addition and wheelchair lift, two handicapped accessible restrooms and an elevator. The library has a book collection of 33,884 volumes, a renowned local history/genealogy collection and a series of multicultural and educational programs that attracted over 7,500 people of all ages in 1992.

Thirty years ago – 1983

Currently assigned as a deacon at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Dunkirk, the Rev. Mr. Dennis W. Mende will be ordained to the priesthood on Nov. 19 in St. Joseph’s Church on Church Square, Albion. The Most Rev. Edward D. Head, bishop of Buffalo, will officiate. Father Mende is the son of Margaret Mende of Tonawanda and the late Rudolph Mende.

Forty years ago – 1973

The Forestville Village Board unanimously approved the passage of an ordinance prohibiting the drinking of alcoholic beverages on the streets and highways of the village.

Fifty years ago – 1963

Brocton Central School’s second annual punt, pass and kick contest was won by James Horlacher (8 year olds); Thomas Manzella (10 year olds); and Eugene Bellando (11 year olds).
