George L. Wakeman
George L. (“Coach”) Wakeman, age 93, of Liverpool, NY, formerly of Elbridge, NY & Jordan, NY, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2013 at his home. He was born in Avon, NY on December 6, 1919, the son of the late George and Mabel Wakeman.
He graduated from Geneseo State College in 1941 and also attended Springfield University, SUNY Brockport, and Syracuse University. He was a parishioner of St. Patrick’s Church in Jordan.
After serving as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II in the United States and in the Pacific, he settled in Jordan and began a 37-year career as a physical education teacher and coach in the Jordan and then Jordan-Elbridge School Districts.
During his retirement he continued an active life, enjoying golf, tennis, dancing, playing the guitar, singing, and playing bridge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Agnes Naomi (Kil-burn) Wakeman, his sister Dorothy Whitaker, and a grandson Frederick J. Wakeman.
He is survived by his sons Thomas (Connie) of Chillicothe, OH and James (Susan) of North East, PA, grandchildren Kenneth Wakeman, Anna Hartwell, Charles (Sarah) Wakeman, William (Nancy) Wakeman and Joseph Wakeman, along with nine great grandchildren. In addition to family members, he leaves behind many dear friends, including Edith Farnham, and the residents and staff of the Parkrose Estates Retirement Community.
Calling hours will be from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 25, 2013 at the Bush Funeral Home, 120 East Main Street, (Rt. 5) Elbridge, NY 13060.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at St. Patrick’s Church, Jordan. The Rite of Committal and Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
