90-year-old woman’s birthday walk benefits Rural Ministry

Birthdays are celebrated in a variety of ways; cakes, candles, parties, BBQ’s and the like.

Recently, a Fredonia woman who doesn’t want to be identified was celebrating her 90th birthday. Traditionally she walks from Barker Common to Demetri’s and has lunch with her friends and family.

This year, with a little twist, she met with 20 of her walker friends and relatives and began the spirited hike from Fredonia to Dunkirk with another 20 waiting at the restaurant to greet them.

She let everyone know that she didn’t want any gifts. Instead she suggested they bring a box of cereal to donate to Chautauqua County Rural Ministry’s emergency food pantry. Over 75 pounds of cereal were donated.

CCRM’s emergency food pantry distributes nearly 2,000 meals monthly to families having a difficult time making ends meet throughout the month.

“Cereal is a nutritional commodity that is regularly provided at our emergency food pantry and will help 75 families meet the daily nutritional requirements. We just thought this was the neatest donation received,” said Executive Director Kathleen G. Peterson.

CCRM is a United Way of Northern Chautauqua County community partner and is supported through New York State Department of Health Division of Nutrition.
