Lawrence J. Zobel

Lawrence J. Zobel, 61, of Fredonia, NY, died suddenly at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa., on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013.

He was born on April 27, 1952 in Buffalo, NY, to the late Siegfried and Sylvia Zobel. He graduated from Amherst High School in 1970.

Lawrence had a long and prestigious career as an attorney. He received both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Buffalo. After graduation, he went from being an Assistant City Attorney to the actual City Attorney. After being in private practice early in his career, Lawrence became a Family Court Confidential Law Clerk for Judge Lynn Hartley. For over 25 years, he was the Family Court Magistrate for Family Court, where he was a devoted advocate for children. It was his goal to assist children so that they would have the best opportunities to lead productive lives. After re-tiring as Magistrate, Lawrence worked part-time in the law offices of Fessenden, Laumer and DeAngelo.

Lawrence was a member of the Chautauqua and New York State Bar Associations and the Masons. His favorite pastime was being a member of the Shorewood Country Club, where he was an avid golfer. When he was not golfing, he enjoyed reading. However, his fondest joy was his grandchildren and the children at the Wiggle Room Day Care Center, where he was known as “Grandpa Donuts.”

Lawrence is survived by his wife of 31 years, Karen (Keyes) Zobel, whom he married on April 10, 1982 in Fredonia, NY. He is further survived by his two daughters, Stephanie (David) Stevens and Sarah (Rick) Kirchernitz, and grandchildren Carter and Sophie Stevens, all of Fredonia. His sisters, Paula Vogt and Linda Meeker, also survive.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Shorewood Country Club today at 1 p.m. with the Reverend Mike Spell officiating.

The family would grate-fully appreciate donations in Lawrence’s memory to the CASA Organization for Child Advocacy, Third Street, Jamestown, NY, 14701.

Arrangements are by the Fantauzzi Funeral Home, 82 E. Main St., Fredonia, NY.
