Fredonia Rotary has been learning much of the history of our area through their guest speakers. Recently, Roy Davis, vice president of the Dunkirk Historical Society, spoke on the area’s history of the railroad industry, in particular, the ALCO Brooks Locomotive Company. Davis also spoke of the efforts of local volunteers during the 1980s on bringing Steam Engine 444 back home to Dunkirk. It currently resides on display at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds, where the public can it enjoy year ’round. The Historical Society is looking for donations to continue its upkeep and maintenance of the railroad cars. Donations are being accepted through the Dunkirk Historical Society c/o Engine 444 Fund.
