Holiday gift shop and silent auction

at YWCA Saturday

The YWCA in Westfield will host a holiday gift shop and silent auction on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.

The event features more than 30 vendors with gift ideas, samples and giveaways. Jamberry Nails, Avon, Pampered Chef, Tup-perware, Webb’s Candies and many more vendors will be present.

The $5 admission fee supports the YWCA and in-cludes auction tickets.

‘The Joy of Giving’ in Lily Dale

The Lily Dale Children’s Acre will celebrate “The Joy of Giving” on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Lily Dale Fire Hall.

There will be a children’s craft table, baked goods and more.

Donations of non-perishable food items and gently used toys will be accepted and distributed to local charities. Donations of pet food and items will also be appreciated.

Hospice tree lighting ceremony Friday

The Brocton Hospice Light a Life Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held Friday at 6 p.m. in the Village Commons.

Pearl Harbor Day Remembrance Saturday

Dunkirk American Legion Memorial Post 62, 211 Central Ave., will hold a Pearl Harbor Day Remembrance on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Legion Hall. A roast beef on weck dinner will follow at 4:30 p.m. until sold out. Cost is $8 and take-outs are available. Tickets can be purchased at the bar. All members and guests are invited.

Hanford Bay railroad crossing closed Tuesday

The Hanford Bay CSX railroad crossing will be closed for repairs Tuesday and will reopen Wednesday. The access road will be open.

Pomfret water district residents reminded to inform town of status

Town of Pomfret residents connecting to the North End Water District waterlines, including West Main Street, Route 60, East Main Street, McAllister Road, Wilson Road, Porter Road and Webster Road, are being advised that their outside and inside plumbing must be inspected and approved by the town in order to have their water turned on and a meter installed.

The installation will be performed by the North End Water District contractor, S. St. George Enterprises. Final connections are being made during this week and next.

Sheridan ZBA to hold public hearing today

The town of Sheridan’s Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing today at 7 p.m. in the town hall.

The hearing will be regarding a special use permit at 2602 Route 5 for a home occupation to sell firearms, long guns only, from the residence.

Fredonia Middle School Winter Concert Wednesday

The Fredonia Middle School will hold its annual Winter Concert on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Fredonia Central Schools District Auditorium.

Musical selections will be performed by the M.S. Jazz Ensemble, the Choraliers, the Junior Orchestra, the Concert Orchestra, the Mixed Chorus, Beginning Band and the Concert Band.

Admission is free and the concert is open to the public.

Gowanda sponsoring Christmas drive

The Cops, Community, Kids and Christmas Toy and Clothing Drive is being held in the village sponsored by the Gowanda Police Depart-ment in cooperation with the Gowanda Central School and the community.

Residents are encouraged to donate a new toy, clothing, gift certificate, decorations, etc., and share the warmth and joy of this holiday season.

Donations can be dropped off at the following locations in the village: the police department, 27 E. Main St.; Community Bank, 76 W. Main St.; American Legion Post 409, 100 Legion Drive; Jesse’s Toy Box, 53 W. Main St.; and the Gowanda Central School main offices. For more information, contact officer Jen Alessi at 913-1143. Sheridan VFW to hold fish fry nights Fridays in December

Sheridan Memorial VFW Post 6390 on Route 20 in Sheridan will hold Friday Fish Fry nights in December from 4 to 8 p.m. Other menu items will be available in addition to fish.

The dates of these dinners are this Friday plus Dec. 13, 20 and 27.

JCC non-credit courses begin Tuesday

Non-credit courses for personal and professional enrichment begin soon at Jamestown Community College’s North County Center in Dunkirk.

Courses include: Micro-soft PowerPoint 2010, Part II, 6-8 p.m., Dec. 3 and 5 ($43); OSHA Hazard Communication Training for Supervisors, 8 a.m.-noon, Dec. 4 ($75); and OSHA Hazard Communi-cation “Right to Know” Training for Employees, 1-3 p.m., Dec. 4 ($35).

A point/insurance reduction course is offered from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Dec. 14. The fee is $35.
