Ice cream and letters unite generations

Northern Chautauqua Catholic School’s third grade class recently participated in a “Meet and Greet” event at Fredonia Place. Students, led by their teacher, Amanda Wachter, and residents of Fredonia Place, recently launched a penpal program that will continue throughout the school year.

Fredonia Place Activities Director Brittany Hawkins reached out to the school after seeing the joyful impact last year’s program had on her residents.

To begin the event, the third-grad-ers enthusiastically sang a few seasonal songs such as “Deck the Patch” and “Pumpkin Bells.” Smiles spread as the children sang their tunes.

After the concert, the students were proud to read their first letter introducing themselves to their penpals. They shared their favorite things, family life and hobbies within their writing. Each of the letters displayed the five parts of a friendly letter which were studied previously in school. The students and residents had additional time to converse over a bowl of chocolate or vanilla ice cream.

Another visitation is being planned in the spring and will wrap up this special program.
