Shakespeare Club learns through theater games
The Fredonia Shakespeare Club met recently for its eighth regular meeting of the 2013-2014 year at the home of Ms. Rosie Sanden. Club President Mrs. Robert Woodbury presided.
In conformance with the theme for the year “Creativity & the Spark of Genius,” Ms. Joyce Haines presented her paper. Her paper “Creativity and Theater” emphasized improvisation and Method acting from her own experiences and resources of information on theater games developed by Viola Spolin and affective memories stressed in Method acting by Lee Strasberg.
Strasberg encourages actors to use their five senses to fix memory for use on stage. Haines cited her own past involvement with the Dunkirk/Fredonia Players and summers spent at the Playground Drama day camp at SUNY Fredonia. Each summer, over one hundred children ages 8 to 17 produce amazing musical productions in less than a week.
Members also enjoyed audience participation to exemplify creativity by playing theater games.
After Haines finished the presentation of her paper, club members requested and enjoyed two brief performances of her classic character, Granny Smith, familiar to local residents and visitors to the area.
Ms. Rosie Sanden was assisted at the tea table by Mrs. William Larson.
At the next meeting of the club, to be held at the home of Mrs. John VanScoter, Mrs. Julian McQuiston will present her paper entitled “Creativity on a Small Scale, but No Less Important.”
