Lewis’ free throw in OT gives Knights sudden-death win over Dunkirk
SILVER CREEK – Jade Lewis’ free throw in triple overtime was the game-winning shot as the Silver Creek Black Knights defeated the Dunkirk Lady Marauders, 55-54, in sudden-death overtime of a CCAA West 1 girls high school basketball game.
“It’s tough to see a game end like that, especially when Dunkirk played so hard,” Silver Creek coach Tammy Rice said.
Silver Creek sent the game into a second overtime as Kalee Dexter drained a 3-pointer with one second left to tie the score. In the second overtime, teammate Christina Williams drained a 3-pointer in the final seconds to send the game into sudden death.
In the third overtime, Lewis drained the free throw for the victory.
“It doesn’t get much better for a girls high school basketball game,” Dunkirk coach Sarah Burnett said. “It was a constant battle. Both teams stepped up. It was exciting, fun and intense for the entire game.”
Jordan Brooks led all scorers with 25 points, grabbed 19 rebounds and had seven blocked shots. Lewis added 12 points, eight steals and five assists. Dexter had 10 points and eight rebounds for the winners.
For Dunkirk, Sidney Charles had 15 points and Natasha Colon added 10.
“Charles guarded Jordan Brooks and did an amazing job for being undersized and outmatched,” Burnett said. “She played an amazing game. We also had sophomore Natasha Colon step up and make some big buckets. I am very pleased with how the girls responded and played with a lot of heart.”
