Fredonia topples Salamanca, 57-24, in Division I action

SALAMANCA – Despite having a week off due to the recent lake effect snow that has covered the region, the Fredonia (2-0) wrestling team showed no ill effects of the time off as it eased past Salamanca (4-0), 57-24, in CCAA Division I action Wednesday.

“Especially with the time off, I was pleased with the way they went after it,” Fredonia head coach Ross Conti said.

Nick Gloff opened the meet with a forfeit win at 160 pounds, before Steve Mignoli pinned the Warriors’ Nick Vaughn in 1:45 to take the match at 1:45.

Then, at 182, Salamanca’s Austin White edged Jake Rinus, 11-8 to get the Warriors on the board.

“That was the best contest of the night,” Conti said. “It was a pretty good back-and-forth match.”

Colton Haas (195) won by forfeit to increase the Hillbillies’ lead, but the Warriors’ Brad Cunningham closed the gap with his win at 220 over Ryan Fisk. Cunningham pinned Fisk in 1:39.

“He’s their best wrestler,” Conti noted.

Malachi Ficek gave Salamanca third win of the night with a 5-1 decision over Jesse Walker at 285, before the Hillbillies Cole Tippens (99) and Ben McKelvey (106) strung together a pair of wins. Tippens won an 11-7 decision over Haylei John while McKelvey pinned Torri Morris in 1:47.

The next three matches were won by forfeit with Salamanca’s Kyle Perkins (113) and Fredonia’s Jovany Ruiz (120) and Jakeb Kelly (126) earning the victories.

At 132, Cole Quigley pinned the Hillbillies’ Steven Kelly in 1:45, before teammate Roger DeJesus pinned the Warriors’ Todd Moore to take the match at 138.

“We had good efforts (Wednesday),” Conti said. “Particularly by Ben McKelvey at 106 (pounds). He was much more aggressive on his feet. The same thing with Roger DeJesus and Jeff Plaister, who picked up his first win.”

Dakota Gardner and Plaister finished off the meet with back-to-back wins for the Hillbillies, as Gardner (145) pinned the Warriors’ Jarron Ball in 3:24 and Plaister (152) pinned Xander Edstrom in 1:14.

The Hillbillies will be back in action this weekend when they travel to take on Roy-Hart in a non-league contest on Saturday.
