Fourth-quarter run sparks Silver Creek to 46-36 win over Southwestern

SILVER CREEK – After a sluggish third quarter, the Silver Creek Black Knights (5-0, 2-0) got back on track with a dominant fourth quarter to remain perfect with a 46-36 victory over Southwestern (2-1, 1-1) on Friday in CCAA West I girls high school basketball.

The Black Knights held a 28-20 halftime edge. However, the Lady Trojans went on a 13-4 third-quarter run to take a 33-32 lead into the final frame.

There, Silver Creek went on a 14-3 run to keep its perfect season intact.

“We talked about having a strong third and we had a terrible third,” Silver Creek coach Tammy Rice said. “We had to refocus in the fourth. The girls stepped it up and made adjustments and it paid off.”

Jordan Brooks led the way with 17 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots. Jade Lewis added 13 points and six assists.

For Southwestern, Alex Sullivan had a game-high 19 points to go along with her three steals, two assists and a block. Emily Wueboldt charted eight boards, four steals, two assists and three blocks.

“This is exciting for us,” Rice said about having a perfect record. “A lot of the girls are stepping up and contributing. It’s a much different team from last year. We have the fire to win. It’s refreshing.”

CCAA?West II

Sherman 67, Brocton 32

BROCTON – Holding a slim 14-9 lead after eight minutes of play, the Sherman Lady Wildcats (4-1, 2-0) exploded for 24 points in the second quarter en route to a 67-32 victory over the Brocton Lady Bulldogs (1-2, 1-1) in CCAA?West II girls basketball action.

“We got in early foul trouble and then they started banging down the 3’s,” Brocton coach Ken Purcell said. “They shot 25 free throws to our five and made eight 3’s to our four. I thought we played decent in the first quarter, but then they got a lot of open looks.”

Bridget Yaw and Roxanne Toy dominated the boards as well as being major contributers in the scoring department for the Lady Wildcats. Both players recorded double-doubles with Yaw scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds while Toy scored 13 points of her own to go with 10 boards.

Sherman’s Talia Coccarelli scored a game-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers. Shenley Luden added 12 points and Katrina Christmas pulled down nine rebounds in the victory.

Jess Putcher led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points and seven rebounds.

Brocton will travel to Chautauqua Lake on Jan. 3 for a CCAA West 2 matchup.

Sherman will be competing in the JCC tournament beginning Dec. 27 and will face Ellicottville in the opening round.

Clymer 55, Westfield 40

WESTFIELD – The Clymer Lady Pirates (2-3, 1-0) used a strong first and third quarter to take down the winless Westfield Lady Wolverines (0-6, 0-1), 55-40, Friday in CCAA West II girls high school basketball.

The visitors jumped out to a 19-5 lead after the first eight minutes. However, Westfield battled back to cut the deficit, 25-17 by halftime.

Unfortunately for the Lady Wolverines, Clymer went on a 19-7 run in the third quarter which essentially put the game away. To Westfield’s credit, it continued to battle as it outscored the visitors, 16-11, in the final eight minutes.

The Lady Pirates were led by Brenna Summers’ 15 points. Kayla Gilkinson added nine points, six rebounds and five assists for the winners.

As for Westfield, Rachel Allen had 14 points and five steals. Lindsay Harp had five blocks while Marissa Okerlund and Emma Fermier each had five rebounds.

“They are methodical and run their offense well,” Westfield coach Matt Eggleston said. “You can’t have mental mistakes and we did.”
