Suspect sought in city shooting
The Dunkirk Police Department is conducting an intensive search for a suspect who is believed to have shot a Dunkirk resident early Wednesday morning.
An arrest warrant has been issued for 24-year-old Traiquane C. Nance, whose current address is unknown. Nance, who is being charged with second-degree assault (a Class D felony) and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, allegedly shot a male victim at or near 426 Swan St. around 4 a.m. Wednesday.
Police say Nance should be considered armed and dangerous.
The victim was located by police with a single gunshot wound to the right hip, according to a press release. He was treated at the scene and taken to Brooks Memorial Hospital for apparent non-life threatening injuries.
City Common Council member William Rivera, who owns 426 Swan St., as well as a second Swan Street property, said Wednesday evening that he was told by a reliable source that an altercation had occurred in that area around the time of the shooting.
“There was some vandalism going on in the streets, and two people from 426 Swan St. went out into the street to attempt to stop what was happening,” he said. “The guys that were doing the vandalism were at a bar in downtown Dunkirk and, from what I understand, they were chased from there.”
Rivera said he visited the victim of the gunshot wound.
“He’s got quite the wound, but he’s already home and he’ll probably be dealing with the after-effects of it for some time,” he said. “From what I was shown, it almost looked like (the bullet) went down his leg (from where it entered in his hip).”
Rivera added he will be speaking with the police chief about the incident today.
“I’m honestly still trying to put the pieces together,” he said. “I’m just going off of what I was initially told. I haven’t really investigated it to the point where I’m satisfied with what was going on, but that was the initial story I was told.”
426 Swan St. is listed as a three-family residence on the city assessment rolls for 2013.
The police investigation into the shooting is currently continuing, and other area law enforcement agencies have been notified to be on the lookout for Nance. Anyone with any information regarding the shooting, or the whereabouts of Nance, is asked to call Dunkirk Police at 366-2266, or their confidential tip line at 363-0313. All information will be kept strictly confidential.
