Leonard F. Nowak
SILVER CREEK – Leonard F. Nowak, 88, went home to the Lord on Dec. 28, 2013 surrounded by his family.
He was born on June 16, 1925 to Thomas and Anna (Nehring) Nowak in Cheektowaga, NY.
In March 1944, he entered the US Army and was honorably discharged in May 1946. He was an Engineer in the Petroleum Distribution Company. During this time he was stationed in Georgia, California, France, Germany and Italy. He continued honoring the US Army by helping establish the original VFW in Silver Creek, where he remained active to this day.
Leonard was also a member of the First Ward Falcon Club, Kosciuszko Polish Home, Moniuszko Club and American Legion Post 62 of Dunkirk.
He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Silver Creek where he married his wife, Anne (Mancuso) Nowak, in January 1952, and remained so until her death in July 2002.
A hard-working man, Leonard was a bricklayer by trade and belonged to the local union in Buffalo for nearly 50 years. In later years, he worked for the Silver Creek Central School in the maintenance department, and belonged to the CSEA union. He also owned and operated a 27-acre grape farm, with a standing contract with Welch’s. None will argue he also “made the best wine in town.”
Being a strong member of the community, Leonard was proud to have served with the Silver Creek Fire Department and Hook and Ladder, and Fire Police for over 50 years.
He loved visiting with family and friends, polka music and dancing, playing pinochle, telling jokes and just having fun.
He is survived by a daughter, Christine Nowak and son, Francis (Felicia) Nowak, both of Silver Creek; grandchildren Brian (April) Nowak and Johnathon Eddings of Silver Creek, Michael McNaughton of Dunkirk, David McNaughton of Buf-falo, Alicia (Matt) Thompson and Adriana Vera of Silver Creek; great- grandchildren Alexis Nowak of Angola, Cadence Nowak of Fredonia and Ella Thompson of Silver Creek; many nieces and nephews; sister-in-law Karen (Gus) Mancuso of Belleview, Ohio who has always been there with us whenever needed, and close friend Joan Militello of Avon Park, Fla.
Along with his parents, Thomas and Anna Nowak, he was predeceased by loving wife Anne Nowak; brother Henry (Helen) Nowak and sister Josephine (Henry) Hartel.
There will be a Mass and memorial at a later date, as per his wishes.
Donations may be made to the Silver Creek Fire Dept. or Emergency Squad.
