Roderick Mawhir “Rod”

Roderick “Rod” Mawhir, 84, of Brocton, NY went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ early Sun-day evening, Jan. 5, 2014.

A beloved husband, father, “Papa” and uncle, he passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side.

Rod was born in Brocton, NY on Dec. 5, 1929, the son of the late William Frederick and Reba (Sunday) Mawhir. He lived in the Brocton area his entire life.

He was a 1947 graduate of Brocton Central School and while he was in high school, he worked delivering milk for Wolcott’s Dairy. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy and was stationed in Memphis, Tenn. A Naval Veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of the American Legion John W. Dill Post 434 of Brocton, NY.

Rod also worked earlier in his life for the Ford Motor Co. in Buffalo, NY. Later, as part of The GI Bill Study Program, he worked for the Pognant Lumber Co. of Brocton, NY which is where he learned his skills in the carpentry trade and where he became the well-known and respected self-employed carpenter that he was in the area. During his life he had worked for the New York State Thruway and was once a Brocton Central School bus driver. He also worked for the Village of Brocton as an employee and at one time was Public Works Superintendent.

Rod was an active member of the Brocton Baptist Church since 1959 where he had served as Sunday School Teacher, Deacon and Trustee. He worked with the Boy Scouts of America and in the 1960s, he was active in the Little League of Brocton. Later, he was instrumental in building the current Arthur “Bud” Mill-er Memorial Little League complex. Rod was an avid supporter of Brocton Central School Sports and was often seen riding to and from events in his customized “Bulldog” golf cart. He also was a retired fireman for the Brocton Fire Department and served at one time as Brocton Village Police Justice.

Rod is survived by his loving wife, Billie J. (Judy) (Hensley) Mawhir, whom he married on March 3, 1951in Memphis, Tenn.; two sons, Steve (Sylvia) Mawhir of Brocton, NY and Stan (Linda) Mawhir of North Tonawanda, NY; two daughters, Peggy (Chuck) Mangus of Fredonia, NY and Patty (Todd) Matteson of Portland, NY; twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Fredora Manzella of Port-land, NY and several beloved nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Jane Wright; his brother, William Mawhir; and his sister, Vivian Burnside.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday Jan. 10, 2014 at the Brocton Baptist Church in Broc-ton, NY. The Rev. Larry Morrison will officiate. Military services will be per-formed by the John W. Dill Post 434. Interment will follow at the Portland Ever-green Cemetery. Friends are invited to call at The Morse Funeral Home, 51 Highland Ave. in Brocton, NY from 2-4 and 7-9 on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014. The family will also be present at the Brocton Baptist Church from 9:30 to 11 a.m. to receive friends prior to the service. Flowers are respectfully declined.
