Fredonia defense shines in 43-37 win

SILVER CREEK – The Fredonia Lady Hillbillies (6-1, 4-0) were able to remain undefeated in league play Friday night with a huge 43-37 win over the Silver Creek Black Knights (5-1, 2-1) in a CCAA West I girls high school basketball matchup.

Freshman Hannah Cybert led Fredonia with a career-high 16 points. Morgan Genovese filled the stat sheet with nine points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists while Caitlyn Cybart pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

“It was a very tough game,” Fredonia coach Carol Zirkle said. “It was very competitive. Jordan Brooks is a phenomenal player. She has a lot of skill. We focused on her and it might not look like we did a good job based on her stats, but they really did. This was a whole team win and our success is due to the fact they push themselves in practice,”

Brooks led Silver Creek with 24 points to go along with 18 rebounds and six blocks. Jade Lewis added 11 points and nine assists in the loss.

“I thought we started strong, but had some turnover that led to baskets on their end,” Silver Creek coach Tammy Rice said. They are a very fast and athletic team. We had a difficult time matching up against their speed. They played good man-to-man and we couldn’t get into our offense. This gives us some things we need to work on.”
