Cold hits water mains
The city of Dunkirk dealt with burst water mains the past couple days due to extreme cold turning to rapid warming.
Mayor Anthony J. Dolce said the water main which burst on Newton Street on Thursday had been fixed by Friday afternoon.
“The first valve broke Thursday and was fixed,” he said. “The second valve broke Friday morning and was fixed by Friday afternoon.”
Dolce added extreme cold is a factor in water mains bursting, and when the weather gets warmer more breaks occur.
“Crooked Brook Drive is under close attention due to the flood watch,” he added. “We keep it clear the best we can and keep a close eye on it.”
With rain in the weather forecast city officials and crews may be busier than they had planned.
