Mary E. Kawski

Mary E. “Mercy” Kawski, age 75, of Dunkirk, died Friday morning, January 10, 2014, at UPMC Hamot Hospital in Erie, PA.

She was born Easter Sunday, April 17, 1938, in Arkwright, daughter of the late Leo and Catherine (Watik) Schilling.

Mrs. Kawski retired recently from the Faculty Student Association at SUNY at Fredonia, where she worked from 1998 to September 2013. She had also worked at Dunkirk Ice Cream, Buffalo Greater Press, and M. Wile in Dunkirk. Mary also made many cakes for family and friends and was commonly referred to as “the Cake Lady”.

Her memberships include St. Elizabeth Ann Seton R. C. Church, Dom Polski Club, Kosciuszko Polish Home and Northern Chautauqua Conservation Club.

She enjoyed saying the rosary and in the past had volunteered to lead the rosary at the Chautauqua County Home. Her church and religion were her top priorities, along with her family.

Her hobbies included bird watching, cooking for her family and in her younger days she enjoyed her garden.

Surviving are her husband of 35 years William J. Kawski, whom she married February 14, 1978; and her children Brenda Butler, of Dunkirk, Charmaine B. Restivo of Sheridan, Gary F. Butler of Dunkirk, Rhonda (Michael) Porpiglia of Dunkirk; sister of Ann (Raymond) Pauszek of Dunkirk, Benjamin (Mary Lou) Schilling of Fredonia; 5 grandchildren Brianna Jozwiak, Charissa Jozwiak, Tara Butler, Lucas Porpiglia, Michael V. Porpiglia; great-granddaughter Sophie Jozwiak, along with many nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother Lawrence Schelling; and sisters Bernice Grupa and Helen Wincenciak.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call at the R. Mackowiak Funeral Home Inc., 56 East Doughty Street in Dunkirk on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday morning at 10 o’clock in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton R. C. Church. Entombment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
