Gary Joseph McAlpine
SOUTH DAYTON – Gary Joseph McAlpine, 71, a state gaming commissioner for New York State, where he worked for five years, died Friday, January 24, 2014 at 219 Pine St. in South Dayton, N.Y.
He was born December 7, 1942 in Waverly, Iowa, the son of the late George and Bernice (Klingbeil) McAlpine.
Gary was a former Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Deputy for over 20 years. He was a member of the South Dayton American Legion Post 1593, where he served as commander for four terms, and a past member of the South Dayton Fire Department Gary got his associate degree in criminal sciences at Jamestown Community College. He served in the Army during the Vietnam Era.
He is survived by his daughter Kerry (Daniel) Gonzales of Whittier, Calif., his stepdaughter Lisa Silleman of South Dayton, N.Y., and his stepson Mike (Patricia) Hughes of Conesus, N.Y. Also surviving are two brothers, Edward McAlpine of South Dayton, N.Y, and Robert McAlpine of Standway, Wash., a sister Barbara Gong of Tonawanda, N.Y., and his grandchildren: Kathleen Gonzales, Amanda Gonzales, Elijah Gonzales, all of Whittier, Calif. His step-grandchildren, Michela Everett of South Dayton, and five other step-grandchildren also survive.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Kathleen McAlpine.
Visitation will be held at Hills Funeral Chapel today from 7-9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Hills Funeral Chapel, 478 Route 83, South Dayton, N.Y. Father Joseph Porpiglia of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church will be officiating. Military services will be conducted by the South Dayton American Legion Post 1593 and the Pine Valley VFW Post 2322. Burial will be in the Cottage Cemetery in the Town of Dayton.
