Schools: Tough choices on exams
Recent weather has been tough on everyone – even area school administrators.
On Monday and Tuesday, district leaders had to make decisions on whether to keep open or close schools. One of the best decisions made Monday was by Fredonia. Give it two hours, and open late.
Dunkirk also made a smart choice. With it being Regents week, have an in-service day on Tuesday while closing the elementary and middle schools. Only those taking exams needed to report.
“There are no make-ups for Regents exams, so we don’t want those kids to miss out on the opportunity to take those exams,” said city schools Superintendent Gary Cerne.
Unfortunately, other districts that did close for the day forfeited an opportunity for their high school students to take the exams. That could be a missed opportunity down the road.
