Long-range shots lift Bears past Black?Knights

SILVER CREEK – The Frewsburg Bears (8-5, 6-1) used a stellar 3-point shooting performance to down the Silver Creek Black Knights (10-3, 5-3), 57-48, Thursday in a CCAA West I girls high school basketball game.

Frewsburg’s Kaitlyn Blanchard drained four treys while Emily Hair had two.

“Even when we covered their shooters, they were still making them,” Silver Creek coach Tammy Rice said.

The Black Knights held a 13-12 lead after the first quarter, but the Bears stormed back to take a 29-23 halftime edge.

Silver Creek cut the deficit, 42-38, by the end of the third quarter. However, Silver Creek point guard Jade Lewis fouled out with 6:30 left in the game, forcing the home team to play without its key point guard.

“They had great pressure, but we weren’t running our press breaker,” Rice noted of her team’s 24 turnovers. “We didn’t do the things we know to do. We panicked and turned the ball over. We need more confidence in that area.”

Frewsburg was led by Blanchard’s 24 points and six steals. Emily Johnson added 10 points and five steals for the winners. Maddie Whippo had five defensive rebounds while Emily Hair had five assists in the win.

Silver Creek was led by Jordan Brooks’ 25 points, 26 rebounds and five blocks. Kalee Dexter added eight rebounds and Cora Utegg had seven in the losing effort.

Silver Creek looks to get back into the win column Saturday at Westfield, with a 2 p.m. start.
