CASAC announces poster contest

“Above the Influence” is a National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign created by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and is a critical component of the nation’s prevention efforts. The campaign’s goal is to inspire youth to think critically about drug use and the influence of their social environment so they can make more informed choices. Throughout 2014, Chautauqua Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Council will target local youth and families with Above the Influence awareness activities, including the 2014 CASAC Poster Contest.

“What Keeps Me Above the Influence?” is the theme for the CASAC 2014 Poster Contest which is open to all Chautauqua County students, grades 3 through 12. Announcements of the 2014 contest have been mailed to all county schools, county libraries, and county youth organizations. To encourage participation, 18,000 bookmarks are being distributed to all county students. They feature the 2013 finalist’s posters and the Grand Prize poster designed by Alexis Stanley of Panama Central School.

The deadline for students to submit a poster is March 21. With more than 500 entries expected, JCC art students will conduct a preliminary judging process to eliminate all but twelve finalists, four in each grade-level category: Category A, grades 3 5, Category B, grades 6 8, and Category C- grades 9 12. At an awards ceremony to be held April 9, the four posters in each category will compete for first place ($50), second ($25) and third ($20) places. The two posters eliminated will each receive an Honorable Mention. The poster with the highest score overall will be the 2014 Grand Prize ($100).

After the ceremony, all entries will be exhibited at either the James Prendergast Library in Jamestown or the Fredonia Free Library in Fredonia. In addition, NYS Assemblyman Andrew Goodell will display the winning posters in the hallways near his office in the State Assembly Building in Albany. Finally, the 2014 Grand Prize poster will be matted and framed and will join the other 12 Grand Prize posters now on display at CASAC.

Besides information distributed to county schools and students, contest information can be found on CASAC’s website, or by calling CASAC at 664-3608 in Jamestown or 366-4623 in Dunkirk.
