Fredonia Rotary names students of the month

Matthew D. Civilette is the son of David and Kathryn Civilette and brother of Deanna and Samantha Civilette. Matthew is currently a senior at Fredonia High School. Residing among the top-ten of his class, Matthew has taken a total of four AP classes (U.S. history, literature and composition, physics, and calculus) and will graduate this June with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors. Matthew has been on the Honor Roll every quarter since sixth grade.

Matthew has been a tri-sport athlete since middle school. He has been on both the indoor and outdoor track teams for six years, as well being a member of the varsity soccer team. Matthew is a two-time recipient of the MVP award in both outdoor and indoor track, while named MIP for two years in both outdoor track and varsity soccer. He has also received the WDOE “Player of the Week” distinction seven times, alongside being awarded with the WDOE Leadership Award. Matthew was awarded the CCAA 1st team All-Star distinction. During his junior year, Matthew championed at sectionals, progressing to the New York State Track and Field Championships for both indoor and outdoor track.

Matthew not only excels in athletics, but he also participates extensively in the musical and performing arts. Matthew has been a part of the symphonic band, playing French horn since fifth grade. Additionally, he has picked up trumpet in order to join the FHS Jazz Band and the Holiday Brass Choir. Recently, he has been accepted into the All-County Jazz Band. Beyond trumpet and French horn, he also pursues independent piano studies. Matthew is a member of the (auditioned and extracurricular) Madrigals singing choir. Involved in theater, he been a participant in the Evening of Theater and the high school musicals. He played the lead role of Trevor Graydon in “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”last year’s production

Matthew is treasurer of the National Honor Society as well as being actively involved in the Model United Nations Club and the Foreign Language Club. Outside of school, he is a member of the USA Track and Field Club and is a PADI registered SCUBA diver. Matthew frequently travels and has traveled to 17 different countries across four continents.

During summers, Matthew is a referee for recreational U10-U17 age groups. During the school year, he holds an unpaid internship at Brooks Hospital. On a weekly basis, he stands right behind surgeons as they complete total joint replacement surgeries (hips, shoulders, knees), remove cataracts, or remove entire organs. Next year, Matthew intends to pursue pre-medical/medical studies. His colleges of interest include: Yale, Cornell, and the University of Silesia-a medical university in Poland.

Skylar Salim is the daughter of Shawn and Angela Salim. A senior at Fredonia High School. she’s taken five AP courses (psychology, U.S. history, physics, government and English) and several advanced courses. She will be graduating with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors this upcoming spring.

Skylar participated in and was on the varsity team for three sports during her high school career. She ran Cross Country for six years, and indoor/outdoor track for three. She’s been a member of student council and the National Honor Society for the past two years. Skylar has also been a member of Key Club for four years, and the Vice President for two. She’s played the violin for nine years and attended NYSSMA several times.

Skylar’s has yet to decide what college she will attend and her major, but she knows she wants to study the humanities and cultural studies
