Forestville almost gets first win on Senior Night
FORESTVILLE – The Forestville Lady Hornets (0-14, 0-7) came close to winning their first game of the season, but it was not enough as the Ellicottville Lady Eagles (8-6, 4-3) pulled away late for the 49-42 victory in CCAA East II girls high school basketball game.
After falling behind, 21-12, after the first quarter, the Lady Hornets battled back to trail just 34-33 heading into the final eight minutes.
However, the Lady Eagles went on to outscore the home team, 15-8, to escape with the win.
Alicia Szumigala led the Lady Hornets with 15 points, 13 rebounds, five blocks and three steals. Faith Mierzwa had 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks in a losing effort.
Marissa Hamilton led Ellicottville with 17 points while Cara Conroy had 12 for the winners.
Forestville celebrated Senior Night and honored Szumigala, Amanda Weaver, Lynanne Woolley and Nichole Bannister before the game.
The Lady Hornets travel to Cattaraugus-Little Valley today.
Pine Valley 68, West Valley 15
SOUTH DAYTON – The Pine Valley Lady Panthers (12-2, 7-0) cruised to an easy 68-15 victory over the West Valley Lady Wildcats (4-11, 3-4) Monday in a CCAA East II girls basketball matchup.
Kayla Mansfield recorded a triple-double in the win by scoring 20 points to go with 10 rebounds and 11 steals. Alex Bentham added 14 points in the win including two 3-pointers.
Kaitlyn Snayczuk led West Valley with seven points and teammate Tricia Thomas contributed with eight rebounds.
Pine Valley will travel to Ellicottville on Thursday for another CCAA East II contest.
Chautauqua Lake 71, Cassadaga Valley 11
MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua Lake Lady Thunderbirds (12-1, 8-0) cruised past Cassadaga Valley (1-13, 1-9), 71-11, Monday in CCAA West II girls high school basketball.
The Lady Thunderbirds held a 33-5 halftime lead and never looked back.
Courtney Hewes and Jenna Einink each scored 14 points to lead the winners. Hewes added 12 steals and Einink had seven rebounds. Tara Hunt had seven assists for Chautauqua Lake.
Joey Horton and Ashley Repine each scored three points and had four rebounds for the Lady Cougars.
Clymer 55, Brocton 37
CLYMER – It was a close game early on between Brocton (2-7, 4-8) and Clymer, but the Lady Pirates (7-2, 9-5) managed to overcome poor free-throw shooting and battled their way to a 55-37 win in West II girls basketball.
Clymer led by just a single point, 12-11, in the first quarter, but found some scoring stride in the second with a 14-5 run and outscored the Lady Bulldogs, 29-22, in the second half.
Leading the way for the Lady Pirates were Dani Wade and Breanna Summers with 10 points apiece. Carly McAfoose led with 11 rebounds, Amanda Einink added nine rebounds, Kayla Gilkinson had eight steals and MJ Trisket made six steals and had five assists.
For Brocton, Jess Putcher scored 15 points, Jess Merle grabbed nine rebounds and Brooke Kuschel pulled down seven rebounds.
Panama 61, Westfield 30
PANAMA – Panama (6-3, 10-3) jumped out to a 16-2 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in a 61-30 win over Westfield.
The Lady Panthers were led by Brianna Marsh with a triple-double of 10 points, 14 rebound and 10 blocks.
Panama also had two double-doubles. Brittany Lenart had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Emilee Sperry recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor Bowen picked up 11 assists
Brenna Culbreth led Westfield with 10 points and five rebounds, and Rachel Allen four steals.
