Gowanda native earns honors for St. Bona rugby

ST. BONAVENTURE – Four members of St. Bonaventure’s men’s rugby team were named to the Empire Rugby Conference All-Empire team, including Gowanda’s Tallon Moritz.

The all-star selections capped off another outstanding fall season for the Bonnies, who went 7-1-1 in the league and narrowly missed qualifying for the national playoffs.

Kevin McCorry, who led the conference in points, and Evan Meister, who led in tries, highlighted the All-Empire team from fall 2013 play. McCorry was named the second-team fly half, while Meister, John Sullivan and Tallon Moritz earned first-team honors.

McCorry, a graduate student who played at McQuaid Jesuit in Rochester, scored 127 points in conference play, 143 total for the season. He set the program record for career points with 366, coming from 14 tries (five points); going 106-186 on conversions (two points) and 27-35 on penalty kicks (three points); and making one drop goal (three points).

McCorry helped this year’s club set the team scoring record of 544 points. This is his second all-conference nomination, the first coming as a junior in 2011. He plans to stay on and help coach the Bonnies next season.

Moritz, a senior from Gowanda, served as assistant captain while playing lock and flanker for the Bonnies. He was vital on defense and for his leadership. The senior came to SBU without any rugby experience and has become one of the most important team members, on and off the field.

Sullivan, a junior who played at Orchard Park, was second in the conference with 9 tries in league play, 10 total for the year, giving him 21 for his career. Sullivan captained the team and led in most meters gained as a ball carrier. Sullivan was also first-team all-conference in 2012.

Meister, a junior who played at Orchard Park, led the conference in tries with 13, giving him 22 for his career. His 13 tries this season came over a stretch of six games. He also set a single-game tackle record against Buffalo with 24. Meister was also all-conference as a freshman in 2011.

Over Christmas break, freshman Luis Carpio of New York City (Xavier High School) attended camp in Tempe, Ariz., for the USA Junior All-American (under-20) rugby team. Carpio played well enough to earn selection to the team and will attend two camps over the next few months before heading to Hong Kong in April for the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy (JWRT) tournament.

The Bonnies will participate in a number of Empire Conference Rugby 7’s tournaments later this spring.
