Wrestling Class Championships set for today

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association wrestling championships are slated for Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 1 at the Times Union Center in Albany.

The road to that destination begins today at the Class Championships.

Class C will be held at Eden Central School. Competing there will be powerhouse Falconer along with Newfane, which is ranked No. 3 in Western New York. Other participants include Fredonia, Southwestern, Lackawanna, Wilson, Akron, Royalton-Hartland, Eden, Medina and Tonawanda.

The Class D championships are taking place at Portville Central School. Included in that bracket is Westfield-Ripley Chautauqua Lake, Cassadaga Valley, Randolph, Portville, Franklinville, Maple Grove, Salamanca, Cattaraugus-Little Valley/Pine Valley, Frewsburg and Holland.

Class B is being held at Cheektowaga and Dunkirk is the lone local school in that tournament. Other teams include host Cheektowaga, Lewiston-Porter, Olean, Allegany-Limestone, Springville, East Aurora and Depew-Alden.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the state qualifiers which will be held next weekend at Niagara County Community College.

Wrestlers will weigh in between 8-9 a.m., with wrestling starting at 10 a.m. The finals are slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
