Chautauqua County Veterans Van receives donation

For five years, the Fredonia American Legion Post 59 has put together a car show to raise money for the Chautauqua County Veterans.

The fifth annual American Legion Post 59 Car Cruise held last August raised $900, which was presented Sunday to Chautauqua County Veterans Service Officer James Hurley.

The Chautauqua County Veterans Van is a service that provides free transportation to and from hospital and doctor visits for local veterans.

Post 59 Event Coordinator Carol Marx said the event grows each year and local businesses continue to contribute.

“We even had donations for this event from as far away as Hanover, Pa., and Venice Beach Calif.,” she said. “I would like to thank everyone who helped with the show.”

Marx said there were 66 cars at the show and she wanted to thank all the men and women who brought their beautiful cars and trucks as the main attraction.

“We estimated about 66 show vehicles, many of whom belong to the Lake Shore Street Rod Club, who came out in support of this worthy cause,” she said.

Marx said there are many who help put the event together every year.

“Of course this event would not have been so successful without the help of Dan Salerno, Keith and Debbie Panek, Phil, Jessica and Nick Berdyck and John Giordano,” she said. “No words could express my gratitude for all that they do to make each and every year bigger and better.”

Hurley said he is retiring this year and this check is one of the biggest he has received.

“The American Legion Post 59 is very generous to us,” he said. “This money will be used for the van which helps our vets get to the hospital.”

“We always do the event on the Friday of Labor Day weekend,” she said.

Marx said she doesn’t know what she would do without all the great people who help her out. “We appreciate all the hard work,” Hurley said.

“It keeps growing and growing,” Marx said. “It is very heart-warming to see people come out and support out vets.”
