Elizabeth Hall Dedrick

Elizabeth “Betty” Hall Dedrick of Cattaraugus Street, Springville entered into rest Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at her home.

She was born June 12, 1918 in Buffalo, a daughter of the late Walter C. and Vanona (nee Hall) Dedrick.

Betty attended Fredonia schools earning her 10-year certification in 1939, her bachelor’s degree in 1945 and her master’s degree in teaching in 1958.

Betty’s first teaching job was in a one-room school house in Mayville, NY in 1939. She was then called to teach at Springville Griffith Institute in 1945 until her retirement in 1976.

Betty was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Springville, the Birthday Club, the Monday Club and the Retired Teachers Association. She volunteered for the Spring-ville Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels and at the Bertrand Chaffee Hospital Gift Shop. Betty loved having such a wonderful hospital in her home town and made a generous contribution which set up a nursing scholarship in her name. Betty loved to read, knit, watch the birds and most of all she loved the many 4th grade students she taught over her 31 years at SGI Elementary School.

She is survived by a nephew, William (Marcile) Dedrick of Fuquay-Varina, NC; and a niece, Patricia (Ronald) Phillippsen of Marion, NY.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother and sister-in-law, Preston H. and Virginia Jean Dedrick.

Friends may call Saturday February 15, 2014 from 2-4 p.m. at Smith-Weismantel Funeral Home, 271 E. Main St., Springville. Inturnment will be in the First United Methodist Church Columbarium, Springville. Memorials may be made to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital.
