Marauder boys take third at Section 6 Indoor Track & Field Team Championships
The Dunkirk boys finished third at the Section 6 Indoor Track & Field Team Championships on Saturday, at Fredonia State.
The Marauders ended the day with 56 points, 22 behind winner Cheektowaga and five behind second-place Tapestry Charter.
Nick Barlette took home a first-place finish in the 55-meter dash in 6.79 seconds while also anchoring the 4.200 relay team, which crossed the finish line first in 1:41.21.
Joining Barlette on the team were Tim Cerrie, Jose Morales and Julio Cheverez.
Cerrie finished second in the pole vault with a Sectional-qualifying height of 10-feet, 6-inches.
“He finally made Sectionals and he’s happy,” Dunkirk head coach Kurt Warmbrodt said. “He’d been at 10-feet all season and getting to 10-feet, 6-inches was the goal. And he got that Saturday.”
Morales took second in the 300 in a season-best time of 38.29 seconds while Ethan Francis was second in the 1,600 in a time of 4:57.51. Also for Dunkirk, Javier Soto was second in the 600 in a time of 1:32.13 and Alec Tomaszewski was fifth in the 1,000 in a Sectional-qualifying
time of 2:49.19.
Dunkirk’s 4×400 relay team, which consisted of Julio Chevarez, Francis, Tomaszewski and Soto took fifth in a time of 3:51.1.
In the girls events, Savia Moreland set a school record in the 55 hurdles with her time of 9.3 seconds. Moreland broke Amanda Michalski’s record of 10.03 seconds, which was set last season.
Also for the Lady Marauders, Emily Hanlon was third in the 55 in 7.81 seconds, Calan Pogorzelski was fifth in the 1,000 in 3:22.89, Faith Rivera was sixth in the high jump (4-8) and Amancia Viera was fifth in the shot put with her throw of 30-10.
The 4×200 relay team of Samantha Hemenger, Pogorzelski, Rivera and Hanlon finished second in 1:59.48.
“There were some excellent performances,” Warmbrodt said. “The team had a lot of personal bests (Saturday), and that’s what has to happen at the end of the season. You need to peak at the end and they seem to be doing a good job of that.”
Dunkirk will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Lancaster.
