A win slips away
Maple Grove’s Emily Swanson scored 15 points in the final eight minutes to rally the Maple Grove Lady Red Dragons (5-13, 3-9) past Dunkirk, 40-37, Monday in CCAA West I girls high school basketball.
The Lady Marauders had two chances in the final 10 seconds to tie the game, but could not convert a 3-pointer before the final horn went off.
“I tell the girls all year, they should be happy they are competing with other teams,” Dunkirk coach Sarah Burnett said. “I’m always pleased with their efforts and how hard they play. We have to play more intelligent and more diligently. We have just had a hard time playing four quarters all year. It happened again (Monday). We were in command, but had some defensive lapses and they took advantage and made it a ball game and came out on top.”
Dunkirk held a 12-10 lead after the first quarter and a 23-14 lead at halftime. It increased the lead, 31-21, before the fourth quarter.
However, from there, Swanson found her stroke.
“She got her points here and there in the first three quarters,” Burnett said. “She stepped up when her team needed her. She wants the ball when the game is on the line.”
Swanson also had 12 rebounds while Allison Winchester pulled down 11 rebounds and five blocks.
Maddie Crandall led the Lady Marauders with 14 points while Analeah Hernandez and Sarah Hanlon each pulled down five rebounds.
Dunkirk travels to Olean on Wednesday before hosting Gowanda on Friday for Senior Night.
Silver Creek 55, Falconer 36
SILVER CREEK – Freshman Nichole Jimmerson had her best game of the season Monday for the Silver Creek Black Knights (13-4, 7-4) and helped her team earn a 55-36 victory over the Falconer Lady Golden Falcons.
Jimmerson finished with 12 points for the Black Knights who jumped out to a 29-10 lead in the first half. Falconer outscored Silver Creek 29-26 in the second half, but the first-half lead proved to be too much.
With the win, the Black Knights avenged an overtime loss to Falconer earlier in the season.
“We focused on playing good defense from the start,” Silver Creek coach Tammy Rice said. “We really played well as a team. A lot of people scored (yesterday). It was our Senior Night and all four seniors played great. It was a great way to see them end their season at home.”
Jordan Brooks led the Black Knights with 27 points and 15 rebounds along with six blocks while teammate Jade Lewis had 12 assists, five steals and four points.
Julia Anderson had 16 points and six rebounds for Falconer in the loss.
Silver Creek will travel to Frewsburg Wednesday for its final league game of the season.
