Lady Billies fall in non-league challenge
HAMBURG – The Fredonia Lady Hillbillies (12-5, 10-2) got off to a slow start and never recovered Tuesday in a 51-36 loss at the hands of Immaculata in non-league girls high school basketball.
Immaculata outscored the visitors 29-14 in the opening half as Immaculata’s Grace Coughlin scored 10 of her 15 points.
“We didn’t take care of the ball,” Fredonia coach Carol Zirkle said. “We had way too many turnovers and didn’t play with our level of intensity.”
Morgan Genovese was a bright spot for Fredonia with 17 points, six rebounds and three steals. Hannah Cybart had 10 points. Sarah Cruver and Madison Abram each pulled down seven boards while Alicia Deering had six.
Immaculata was led by Jordan Heinold’s 21 points. The post player is a key reason why Zirkle scheduled Immaculata for a non-league contest.
“She is one of the better post players,” Zirkle said. “She can shoot the 3 and post you up. She can also dribble the length of the court. I stacked three tough non-league opponents. It prepares us for different aspects to get ready for playoffs. Holland has a player who is one of the best scorers. This time we went against one of the best post players and Pine Valley has pressure defense and plays a physical game.”
That game against Pine Valley will be Friday when the Lady Hillbillies will host Senior Night.
