Daniel Richard Butts

Daniel Richard Butts, age 66, of Fredonia, N.Y., passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at home with his family at his side after a courageous year-long battle with cancer.

He was born in Dunkirk, October 23, 1947 to Reva (Newell) Kuczenski and the late Richard Butts. A 1965 graduate of Fredonia High School, Danny served in the U.S. Air Force from 1965-1969, earning the rank of sergeant. He then attended and graduated from Jamestown Community College in 1971.

Dan truly loved being in the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, spending countless hours on Lake Erie with his grandfather, Marshall Newell, catching yellow pike. He caught numerous trophy Muskies and Northern Pike out of Cassadaga Lake while living by the lake for twenty-nine years. He also loved playing and being competitive in many sports including softball, basketball, bowling, and golf. The New York Yankees and the Buffalo Bills were his favorite sports teams.

Dan had a forty-two year career with the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department working as a full-time road patrol officer, in the civil division, and as a part-time court security officer until March of 2013, when he resigned due to health reasons.

He loved his family. Being a good example to his sons was one of his strong traits. He will be remembered for his wonderful smile, his kind words, and never ending willingness to help others. Dan was well respected by those who knew him.

Danny is survived by his wife of forty years, Phyllis (Pierson) Butts; two sons: Daniel Butts, Jr. of Fredonia, and Brandon Butts of Waxhaw, N.C.; one granddaughter, Saige Butts, of Fredonia; his mother, Reva Kuczenski of Fredonia; two sisters, Peggy Porter of Wilmington, N.C., and Crystal Butts of Jamestown; and three brothers: Jim (Libby) Calato of Pittsburgh, PA, Richard (Cindy) Butts, Jr. of Dunkirk, and Randy (Valerie) Butts of Fredonia.

He was preceded in death by his father Richard Butts in March of 2013; and his stepmother, Ardith Butts, in December 2007.

Family will receive friends on Friday, February 14, 2014 from 4-8 p.m. at the LARSON-TIMKO FUNERAL HOME, 20 Central Ave., Fredonia, where a funeral service will be held Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Allen Chase officiating.
