‘Grueling season’ brings rewards

It was a trifecta of sorts for Dunkirk’s wrestling team.

Three members, after competitions in Niagara Falls over the weekend, earned the right to represent the Marauders at New York State Public High School Athletic Association wrestling championships. Hector Colom, Tito Colom and Marquis Buchanan are guaranteed spots in the capital district event, while Nick Jones may also get a bid.

“Six years ago, our kids had never seen a wrestling mat or a match,” Dunkirk coach Joe McMurdy said. “Each and every one of the kids, whether they are here wrestling or got beat last week, we get great effort and good numbers. The kids work hard. It’s a great group of kids to work with and (it’s) a lot of fun to work with (them). This is a fun group. It’s been a long, grueling season.”

Marauder pride, indeed.

Also a note of congratulations to Dakota Gardner, who will represent Fredonia High School at the tournament.
