NCCF awards Service Learning Mini-Grants to Dunkirk City Schools
The Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation has expanded its Service Learning Mini-Grant Pro-gram.
Dunkirk City School District teachers recently received grants for eight service learning projects.
Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.
Through the establishment of the mini-grant program, NCCF will work with local educators to bring community service opportunities into the classroom.
The pilot program began last year in the Fredonia Central School. This winter NCCF awarded $3,011 to the Dunkirk City School District. Students from kindergarten through grade 12 will participate in the following eight mini-grant projects:
Cakes for Critters will involve students raising money for the humane society through decorating cakes for a Chinese auction.
The Camp Gross Sensory Walk grant involves students updating and cleaning the Sensory Walk Trail at Camp Gross.
Children Sewing for Seniors will provide residents of St. Vincent’s Home with not only hand-made lap quilts but also quality time with the students during several visits to the home.
Dunkirk Middle School Career Fair involves working with community partners and a mentoring program to provide career information to students and to share with families and the community.
Helping our Neighbors provides severely intellectually disabled students the opportunity to provide lunches for the Friendly Kitchen including purchasing, preparing, serving and cleaning up.
Tenth grade students will purchase books to use during story hour with elementary students to demonstrate positive male/female characteristics through the Positive Role Model grant.
The Student Ambassador Program will support student’s various community service projects, including highway adoption and new student orientation. Students will learn how to plan and organize events.
The Tech Savvy! grant provides female students the opportunity to attend Buffalo’s Tech Savvy! conference that will focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers and educational opportunities. Each girl will also collect and donate paper products and cleaning supplies to Rural Ministry.
