Parks Commission meeting Thursday

The Chautauqua County Parks Commission will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Chautauqua County Airport in Jamestown.

The public is welcome to attend.

‘Fracking Facts and Fracking Fictions’

discussion Tuesday

The League of Women Voters is sponsoring a discussion titled “Fracking Facts and Fracking Fictions” at JCC-North, 10807 Bennett Road, Dunkirk, Room 117. The program will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. Learn more about horizontal hydrofracking with Glenn Wahl of JCC. This free event is open to the public.

Radio operators

needed for dog sled race this weekend

The Cattaraugus County Amateur Radio Emergency Service team is in need of radio operators for Saturday and Sunday. This is for a Can-Am dog sled race in Allegany State Park. Radio operators, or hams, will man several checkpoints in the park. Races start at 8:30 a.m. each day. There will be a short distance and a long distance race both days. If interested, contact Gary Tillinghast at 592-9554. Ten to 12 hams are needed.

Safe boating classes

Safe boating classes will be held at Chautauqua Marina, 104 W. Lake Road, Mayville. The course is for adults and children ages 10 years and up. Course fee $39. Materials fee $5. Pre-registration is required. Call 753-3913 or 753-0409.

Classes are as follows:

May 21 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and May 22 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. (two-day class)

June 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (one-day class)

July 19 and July 20 from 5 to 9 p.m. (two-day class)

Aug. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (one-day class)

Instructors will be Gay-nell Anderson, Deborah Clementi and Tiffany Clementi.

Chautauqua County Genealogical Society to host research seminar

The Chautauqua County Genealogical Society will host a seminar focusing on researching family history on April 26.

The event will help people learn more about various free, online resources that can be used when researching their own family history.

It will also provide important things to know when doing online research. Featured speakers include research specialist Rhonda Konig from the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library and Norman Carlson from the Fenton Historical Society in Jamestown.

The daylong event will be run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel in Dunkirk on April 26 and will include morning re-freshments and a lunch buffet. The cost is $25 per person and seating is limited.

Red Cross opens

shelter in Silver Creek

The American Red Cross of Southwestern New York has opened a shelter at Silver Creek Assembly of God, 1385 Route 20 in Silver Creek, for residents forced to evacuate due to flooding around Sunset Bay.

Volunteers will keep both shelters open as long as it is deemed necessary.
