Dunkirk to hold annual charity basketball game

The Dunkirk Dunks for Donations Committee is pleased to announce that its ninth annual charity basketball event will be held Friday at 7 p.m. in the Dunkirk High School gymnasium.

The funds raised during this event will help several district staff members and students, including School 7 first-grade teacher Jill Krzyzanowicz, high school English language arts teacher Melissa Leffel, high school cleaner Sally Dolce and School 5 first-grade student Yoneill Heredia, who are all battling cancer.

The committee has also chosen seventh-grade student Colmari Garcia, who lost her home and all of her belongings in a house fire.

The event kicks off with a children’s carnival, put on by the National Honor Society. The carnival goes from 4 to 6 p.m. and features games and activities for elementary-aged children at a minimal cost. The concession stand will be open throughout the afternoon and evening and there will be a live performance during the carnival by the Marauder Steel band.

Marianne Manzella has once again organized a large silent auction that will be open at the start of the carnival and stay open through halftime of the game when winners are announced.

The auction includes many beautiful baskets donated by various district departments and the community. You do not need to be present to win and can purchase presale auction tickets by calling Marianne at 366-9300, ext. 3388.

The event will conclude with the very popular faculty basketball game. The game will feature the staff of the Dunkirk Middle School taking on the staff of the Dunkirk High School.

There will be a draft of elementary faculty prior to tip-off.

At halftime, will be the “dress like a faculty member” contest where students will show off their outfits and a winner will be selected by the audience.

The second half will feature the players coming out of the locker room dressed as some of the students they work with on a daily basis.

Presale tickets for the game are available at Matt’s News as well as the Dunkirk Middle and High schools. Remaining tickets will be available at the door. Admission is $5. If you are interested in making a donation to help the many members of the Dunkirk City School District family who are in need, call committee chairman Mike Green at 203-7204.
