Comment before a decision
A comment period on the mute swan management plan may have closed, but residents still have an opportunity to make their voices heard.
Since our first article regarding the “Save the swans” on Cassadaga Lakes, there has been great interest from numerous readers on the topic. Two village residents spoke out against plans by the state Department of Environmental Conservation to reduce the species’ number by 2025.
“The symbol of Cassadaga is our mute swans,” said resident Chuck Battaglia. “There needs to be an outcry from the people; grandparents take their grandchildren down to feed them.”
For its part, the DEC believes the swans are an invasive species that can be very aggressive and have detrimental effects on wetlands and habitat of native fish and wildlife.
