Geraldine W. Poweska, 94, of Dunkirk died Monday morning (Feb. 24, 2014) at the Chautauqua County Home.
She was born Dec. 12, 1919 in Dunkirk, the daughter of the late John and Anna (Kinn) Weber.
Mrs. Poweska had worked at the Kraft Foods plant in Dunkirk from 1956 until its closing.
She enjoyed traveling, reading, crossword puzzles, and taking care of family members.
A devout Catholic, Mrs. Poweska was a member of Blessed Mary Angela Parish St. Hyacinth Church and the parish Rosary Society.
She was a lifelong resident of the city of Dunkirk.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ann (Walter) Szczublewski of Dunkirk; one son, Richard (Louise) Poweska of The Villages, Florida; six grandchildren, Michael (Hilary) Szczublewski, Kristin (William) Tomasic, Tammy Poweska, Trisha (Gabe) High, Richard (Cheryl) Poweska and Todd (Greta) Poweska; eight great-grandchildren, Preston, Grace, Juliane, Kayce, Emalee, Amanda, Richard III and Katlyn; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Poweska, whom she mar-ried Aug. 16, 1941 and who died Nov. 17, 1974; two brothers, Rev. Herman Kollig C.P., and Francis Kollig; and five sisters, Margaret Weber, Elizabeth O’Connell, Katherine Burwell, Julia Reise and Anna Ahlf.
The family expresses their sincerest thanks to the entire staff at the Chautauqua County Home for 4 1/2 years of caring for Gerry.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated Thursday morning at 10 o’clock in Blessed Mary Angela Parish, Church of St. Hyacinth. Calling hours will be held today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the McGraw-Kowal Funeral Home. The Blessed Mary Angela Rosary Society will recite the rosary at 6:30 this evening at the funeral home.
