FSU?has two winners at Regional meet

ROCHESTER – Fredonia State senior Ashley Keller won the NCAA Division III diving regional 1-meter championship Friday at Rochester Institute of Technology and guaranteed herself a return trip to the national meet next month.

Keller’s victory was narrow – 412.20 points to 411.30 points by Ithaca’s Nickie Griesemer. Miranda Fergus of Ithaca was third with 385.55 points.

Fredonia State senior Katelyn Haley was sixth with 373.00 points, junior Heather Colby 10th with 351.90, and senior Breena Cogliandro 19th at 322.50 points. There were 24 women in the competition.

Keller was among three Blue Devil divers to compete at the 2013 NCAA championship meet. By qualifying this year, she extended Fredonia State’s streak of having at least one diver, male or female, at nationals to nine straight years.

The women’s 3-meter competition is scheduled for Saturday. Following that event, six other women from the RIT regional will join Keller at the national meet March 19-22 at Indianapolis.

Fredonia State will have a second diver at the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving championship meet in March in freshman Arron Carlson.

Carlson scored 478.1 points to win men’s 3-meter during regional qualifying Friday at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Two other Fredonia State men competed Friday. Rafael Santiago, a sophomore, scored 421.points to finish sixth, just ahead of freshman Jeff Matter, with 420.5 points. Both will still have a chance to qualify for nationals when they compete today in men’s 1-meter. Competition is scheduled to begin at noon.
