CCHA C League Playoffs


EBC 2, Team 6 1, OT – Ryan Simon scored both goals, including the game winner for EBC. Marin Willow picked up an assist while Phil Nosek earned the win between the pipes.

Collin Preston notched Team 6’s lone goal with assists going to Joe Shearer and Bill Powell. Ken Shearer was the losing goalie.

Up next for third-seeded EBC is a semifinal matchup with No. 2 Beaver Club on Sunday, March 9, at 4:45 p.m.

Wicked Glen 3, Lakeview Shock 2, OT – Joe Greekin sent Wicked Glen into the semifinal with his game-winning goal in overtime while Paul Hickey and Kevin Brooks scored the other goals. Assists went to Drew Carriero (two), Chris McCaan, Bobby Brown and Cody Williams. Nate Williams was the winning goalie.

For Lakeview Shock, Mike Korzeniewski scored both goals, with assists going to Chris Spellberg and Tony Privitera. Brian Lillie suffered the loss in net.

No. 4 Wicked Glen takes on No. 1 Coughlan’s on Sunday, March 9, at 6 p.m.

44th Annual John S. Tofil Interclub Bowling Tournament – Dom Polski hosted the annual event while the Beaver Club captured its first overall title. Kosciuszko Club was in second and was followed by the First Ward Falcon Club, Dunkirk Moose Club and the Columbus Club.

Matt Eaber won the Lou Nocek Award for high series with a 699 while Chad Cerrie had the high tournament game of 277. Shift Awards went to Jim Ellman Jr. with a 686 series, Kevin Kaszuba with a 267 game and Kevin Mikula with a 678 series.

The clubs will compete in the Interclub Golf Tournament at Shorewood Country Club in the spring.

Dunkirk Native Wins

Snowshoe Race Bronze Medal

Dunkirk native Dave Sek recently won a bronze medal at the US National Championship Snowshoe Race, which was held at Prospect Mountain Resort in Woodford Vermont, on March 1.

Sek, a Dunkirk Senior High School Class of 1960 alum, finished third in the 70-74 age group. Competitors raced from all regions of the US, as well as Canada and Europe. The 10k (6.2-mile) race had over a 1,100-foot climb before heading back down the mountain. Sek has been a longtime runner and has been snowshoe racing for 13 years.


Cattaraugus County HOF Banquet

The 12th Annual Cattaraugus County Sports Hall of Fame banquet will be held on Saturday, March 29, at the Little Valley Legion beginning at 6 p.m. The event will include a buffet dinner, door prizes, award’s ceremony and sports auction. Previous inductees are encouraged to attend and will be introduced.

This year’s class of inductees include: Tom Howard (Allegany-Limestone), Rick Feuz (Cattaraugus-Little Valley), John Kokel (Gowanda) Joe Smith (Franklinville), John Fitzpatrick (Hinsdale), Ron Ashworth (Pioneer), Bob and Deb Ford (West Valley), Geoffrey Dietrich (Salamanca), Bob Emke (Ellicottville), Carolyn Shields (Olean), Louise Freeman (Randolph) and Gary Sweatland (Portville).

Fredonia Little League

All first-year players in the Wright League (boys aged 10-12) must attend the evaluation day on Saturday, March 8, at 9:00 a.m.

Evaluation day will be in the Fredonia Elementary gym. Players should wear regular gym shoes (no cleats) and bring their baseball glove and bat. Teams will be selected immediately following the evaluation. For more information, call Ed Schrantz at 785-0698.

Cassadaga Babe Ruth softball sign ups.

Sign ups for 10U and 12U teams will be held at the Cassadaga community building from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, March 8.
