Brooks to continue UPMC partnership

A continued affiliation with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center at Hamot Hospital in Erie was approved Thursday night by the Brooks Memorial Hospital board of directors.

Terry Dunford, director of corporate communications for the Dunkirk hospital, said while reaffirming its association, the board also reached unanimous consent that Brooks, and hospitals similar to Brooks, cannot go at it alone in the future and having a community type stand-alone hospital is a thing of the past.

“The board is unanimous in its support for providing quality health-care solutions for northern Chautauqua, southern Erie and the western Cattaraugus counties region,” he said Friday.

The next step, Dunford noted, was to continue the strategic planning process and craft a path for the future. The next strategic planning session for the hospital will take place in the next four to six weeks.

“These are good things for our employees, board and our community,” Dunford said.

In addition, senior hospital management has already scheduled meetings for all employees next week to update them on the board’s action and the strategic planning process, which is now under way.

The employee meetings will take place with all shifts and be held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

“This is a tipping point for the betterment of the Brooks family and the Dunkirk-Fredonia region,” he said.

Dunford noted that as this process moves forward, Brooks Hospital is committed to keeping its community stakeholders informed.
