Some of the best, worst of the week
Here are some of the best – and worst – of the week:
STATE TRIP – Good luck to the Chautauqua Lake Lady Thunderbirds varsity basketball team. The team is at Hudson Valley Community College today for its first ever state finals appearance, making it to the final four. The Lady Thunderbirds will play the Haldane Blue Devils. The winner will play in the state title game Sunday afternoon. The team has already won the Class C Far West Regional Championship. Perhaps they can finish out with a state title! But no matter what happens, we’re all proud of all the hard work the team has done to get this far.
HOCKEY RETURNS – The North American Hockey League will be returning to Chautauqua County in September and play at the Jamestown Savings Bank Arena. The yet-to-be-named team will play more than 20 home games during the 2014-2015 season. The team will be part of the North American 3 Hockey League, which is a Tier 3 league. Games are expected to cost around $5 per person to attend. There’s been a number of teams that have come to the Arena that haven’t returned. Hopefully this team will be able to stick around.
BIRD VIEWS – A special thank you to the readers who have been sending us photos of various local birds, like the eagles and snowy owls, spotted locally. It’s not something we see every day. If you take a photo and would like to submit it for consideration for print, email it to firstname.lastname@example.org, mail it to us at 10 E. Second St., Dunkirk, NY 14048 or drop it off in our office and we’ll see if we can print it.
CREATING FALSE HOPE – We’re glad that the Petri’s factory has a new owner and the building’s not being left vacant. Crescent Manufacturing is purchasing it, since ConAgra laid off up to 200 people. We are just annoyed how for the past year local officials hinted there was all this interest in the facility. Instead, no new jobs are coming. The building will just be used for storage.
