B. Patrick Bailen

B. Patrick Bailen, of Fredonia, N.Y., age 71, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Brooks Memorial Hospital.

He was born April 2, 1942 in Dunkirk to the late Henry and Florence Mekus Bailen.

Following his graduation from Cardinal Mindszenty High School in Dunkirk, Patrick enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. He was member of the Marines from 1959-1963. Among his duties, he was assigned to an Honor Guard stationed in Washington, D.C., where he guarded President Kennedy.

On July 12, 1969, he married the former Penelope Skrypek, and was married 44 years at the time of his death. Mr. Bailen was a 29 year employee of the New York State Thruway Authority based in Westfield. He started his career with the Thruway Authority in 1970, and retired in 1999 as a maintenance foreman.

Patrick enjoyed both hunting and fishing, and was an avid reader. While busy with his family and work life, he also worked his land as a grape farmer. Patrick was a member Fredonia American Legion Post 59, the John Murray VFW Post 1017, the Beaver Club and the Conservation Club.

Besides his wife Penelope, Patrick is survived by two daughters, Courtney Bailen (Dan Metz) of Medina, NY and Heather Barnet (Jonathan) of Hingham, MA; three grandchildren, Michael B. Griffin, Devin P. Griffin and Thomas B. Barnet; three sisters and one brother, Rosemary Kumler (Dr. Phil) of Fredonia, Sharon Bowden of Ashville, NC, Mark Bailen of Florida and Rebecca Bailen of Ohio. Also survived by nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Sunday 2-5 p.m. at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Ave., Fredonia, NY, where funeral services will be held Monday morning at 10 a.m. Full Military Honors will be held at the Funeral Home following the service. Interment will be in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. Flowers gratefully declined. Memorial contributions in Mr. Bailen’s memory may be made to the Darwin R.
