Alfreda E. Pogorzelski

Alfreda E. Pogorzelski, age 95, of Dunkirk, died Monday morning, March 17, 2014, after a short illness at the Chautauqua County Home.

She was born Oct. 17, 1918, in Buffalo, daughter of the late Teofil and Leocadia (Smith) Rafalski.

Alfreda married Bernard Penkaty and settled in Dun-kirk. They had a son Robert and daughter Darlene. Unfortunately, Bernard passed away 11 years later and Alfreda remarried 5 years following to Frank Pogorzelski. Together they operated a successful grocery store at the corner of Genet and Pine streets. Frank died 11 years after their marriage.

Alfreda was a strong and independent person who supported herself throughout her remaining years. She was a past employee of Kresge’s and Jupiter stores and St. Vincent’s Home for the Aged, all in Dunkirk. She retired, at the age of 85, from St. Vincent’s Home. She was happiest when cleaning, cooking, watching the Buffalo Bills, the news or Dancing with the Stars. She enjoyed her home and family.

A devout Catholic, she was a member of Blessed Mary Angela Parish Church of St. Hyacinth, where she attended Mass every Saturday at 4 PM.

Surviving are her son Robert (Marian)Penkaty, and daughter Darlene (Robert) Uszacki, both of Dunkirk; grandsons Gerald Penkaty, Jeffrey (Stephanie) Uszacki, John (Dawn) Uszacki; grand-daughter Katherine (Dar-ren) Czechowski; great- grandchildren Bobby and Elisha (Jason Benner) Kulpa, Wesley, Eli, Taylor and Dillon Uszacki along with many nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands Bernard Penkaty and Frank Pogorzelski; grandson James Uszacki; brothers Matthew Rafalski, Floyd Godlewski, Richard Godlewski; sisters Emily Rafalski, Alice Godlewski, and Martha Godlewski.

Relatives and friends are welcome to call at the R. Mackowiak Funeral Home Inc., 56 East Doughty Street in Dunkirk, on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A Mass of Chris-tian Burial will be celebrated Thursday morning at 10 o’clock in Blessed Mary Angela Parish Church of St. Hyacinth. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
