Education course for home buyers Saturday and March 29

Chautauqua Opportunities is hosting a Home Buyer Education Course for anyone who is looking to purchase a home. These courses will be held on Saturday and March 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Laughlin Center at 402 Chandler St. in Jamestown, and April 19 and April 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Connections North located at 10825 Bennett Road in Dunkirk.

COI will offer an orientation which will provide an overview of the process for those who are interested in purchasing a home such as maintaining your budget, understanding credit, shopping for a home, getting a mortgage, and keeping your home.

If you’re interested in more information or would like to set up an orientation for the Home Buyer Education Course, contact COI at 366-8176 or in Jamestown at 661-9430. This class is for educational purposes and does not automatically qualify someone to purchase a home. Once completed, the certification is good for one year.

Resident reports phone scam

Area residents are warned about telephone scams from callers who claim they are a grandchild who is facing legal action in Peru. An area resident told the OBSERVER the call came in the morning, when residents are just waking up. During the conversation, the caller says they were picked up by law enforcement after giving a ride to two fishermen who were carrying illegal drugs and weapons.

In the end, a sum of money is requested. Police often tell residents to be vigilant in the case of any caller requesting money.

County Certified Food Handler Class Monday

The next Chautauqua County Certified Food Handler Class will be held Monday at the Chautauqua County Office of Emergency Services, Training Room #1, 2 Academy St. (Old Mayville High School), Mayville. Use the rear entrance facing the south parking lot next to bus garage.

Registration and sign-in is 12:30 p.m. Class is from 1 to 4 p.m. Preregistration is required. Call 753-4693 to register. Cost is $35 for profit/$20 non-profit. Additional information on the class is posted at www.myhealthycounty.com.

Lakeshore Humane Society holds Pet Adoption Day/Open House Saturday

The Lakeshore Humane Society will hold a Pet Adoption Day/Open House at its Adoption Center on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at 431 E. Chestnut St., Dunkirk. The public is invited to see the facility and meet some of the dogs and cats who need caring homes.
