GOWANDA – There will be a new face to lead the Gowanda Central School District into the 2014-2015 school year. The new superintendent for the district was announced at a recent board meeting.
Silver Creek High School Principal James Klubek will take the position July 1. The board of education started on an extensive search once Superintendent Charles Rinaldi announced his retirement.
The board has been working with Erie-2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES and Dr. David O’Rourke as a search consultant.
“Gowanda has a wonderful, caring and diverse family-oriented community, and a very good school system. Jim Klubek has an excellent background to share with the district and his experiences will benefit the school district and community for many years to come,” said O’Rourke in a press release. “I am personally looking forward to working with Jim. He is an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and talented educational leader.”
Board President Lynn Hammond read the resolution as part of a regular board meeting to appoint Klubek from July 1 through June 30, 2017. Hammond said there were several outstanding candidates who applied for the position. She said the overall process “went very well.”
“We were very fortunate to have a lot of really great people apply. We had the very nice fortune to meet with many of the people and get to know them during the interviews. I believe our choice in Mr. Klubek is the right direction to take for our district. I know that we all feel that he’ll be a very nice addition to the community and district … so welcome and thank you,” Hammond said.
Klubek, who was in attendance at the meeting with his family, said he was excited and honored for the upcoming position. He complimented the thorough search process which allowed him to meet and interact with various groups within the district.
“It was excellent because it allowed me to meet a lot of the groups within the school. One of the questions I asked of all the groups was ‘What’s your sense of pride in the district?’ … (Answers included) we have dedicated teachers and special students. That’s a heck of a great start,” said Klubek. “Everything else you can work from, but if you have that, I’m proud to walk into (that) situation. I appreciate the board, I spent a lot of time with them. They’re wonderful.”
According to a press release from the district, Klubek began his career in 1991 as a global studies and economics teacher at Silver Creek High School. He accepted a position in 1999 as assistant high school principal for the Hamburg Central School District. He was appointed to his current position as Silver Creek High School principal in 2010. He has also held several administrative positions for the West Seneca Central School District.
He received a bachelor’s degree in social studies from Canisius College, a master’s degree in social studies education and post-graduate studies in educational administration both from SUNY Buffalo.
“Mr. Klubek will be a wonderful asset to our school district. His record of improving student performance will serve our students well. We are excited about his leadership style and record of achievement,” she said.
Klubek attributed his career success to the people he has worked with. He plans on continuing that success at Gowanda.
“I’ve had success anywhere that I’ve gone and it’s not because of me, it’s because of the people. I plan on continuing that here by trusting the people that I work with, supporting the people I work with because they’re the people that are going to make it all run,” Klubek said.
