Local church membership grows

On Sunday, March 9 the First United Presbyterian Church of Silver Creek grew by eight members, an 8 percent growth rate.

First United Presbyterian is bucking a nationwide trend: main line churches have been struggling with membership for a number of years. Population declines in Chautauqua County communities present a big obstacle to growth. However, First United Presbyterian draws from a broad geographic area, including Hamburg, Forestville, Fredonia, Charlotte, Dunkirk, Irving, Hanford Bay, and Hanover, besides the village of Silver Creek.

The new members are David Summerton, William Clark, Janet Elwell-Cossin, Eric Krone Sr., Lynn Krone, Eric Krone Jr., Mark Petersen and Christopher Petersen.

Members and friends describe community outreach, many fellowship programs, including a large youth fellowship, a robust ageless fellowship, and monthly breakfasts as reasons they come to First United Presbyterian. Organ aficionados come to hear the historic pipe organ. The congregation and friends join in weekly Bible studies, worship at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, and monthly Taize services. During the Lenten Season weekly Wednesday suppers and worship are scheduled at 6 p.m. Upcoming worship events include a Tenebrae service on April 17 at 7 p.m.

All are welcome. For information call 934-2018, or check the congregations’s Facebook page: First United Presbyterian Church Silver Creek, NY.
