Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary holds monthly meeting

CASSADAGA – The Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary met recently for its regular monthly meeting. President Gayle Cieplinski presided. Chaplain Paula Pattison opened the meeting with a prayer.

The members present recited the Pledge of Allegiance, the Auxiliary Preamble and had a moment of silence for the country’s fallen soldiers. The minutes from the last meeting were not available for reading; Treasurer Karen Field read the treasurer’s report; correspondence was read by President Gayle.

Chairpersons present gave committee reports.

Pattison reported that the Auxiliary made food for and served luncheons for three funerals in the past month. Two were for Post 1280 Legion members, Dan Butts and Frank Wheeler, and one was for Jean Shutt, the wife of a Post 1280 member. It was also noted that Unit 1280 lost a member, Kathy Dascenzo. She will be missed.

Children and youth chairperson Gayle Cieplinski reported that the annual children’s Easter party, scheduled for Sunday April 6 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Post, is coming along. Lots of goodies, games, crafts, are planned and of course the Easter Bunny will make an appearance. Squadron 1280 will be cooking the hot dogs for the occasion. Cookie and candy donations for this event would be greatly appreciated, and needed at the Post by Saturday April 5. Call 595-3145 with questions.

Junior chairperson Pat Hayward reported that the Junior Unit made breakfast for the Son’s meeting in January, and for the Legion meeting in March. Both groups enjoyed their meals and thanked the girls. The Juniors are holding a food collection at the Post, at the Cassadaga Shur-Fine, and at the Sinclairville Superette from March 16 through April 13. Donations will benefit Cassadaga Food Pantry. The Superette donations will go to the Sinclairville Food Pantry. The girls and the Sinclairville 76er’s collected pennies and donated them to Hospice.

The girls are also making Easter favors to take to Fredonia Place residents; and they are working on their entries for the County Poppy contest. The Juniors meet the second Sunday of the month from 2 – 4 p.m. During their meetings they learn about the Auxiliary, the Legion, and the flag. They also work on earning badges. A brunch is being planned for the Senior Auxiliary in May.

Membership chairperson Sally Lawson reported that the Unit is at about 74 percent for the year. Sally is still taking Unit 1280 dues for 2014. Send yours in today!

President Cieplinski reported on the Department Commander, Auxiliary President and Son’s Commander’s luncheon and dinner held in February.

Final plans were discussed for table decorations for the Post 1280 celebration/dinner to honor the Legion birthday.

With no further business at hand, Chaplain Pattison gave a closing prayer, and Cieplinski adjourned the meeting.
