Sheridan courthouse nearing completion

SHERIDAN – Town officials in Sheridan are still aiming for a completion date of late April or early May for the new town courthouse and office renovations at the former St. John Bosco Church building.

Supervisor Louis Delmonte announced during a recent board meeting that “good progress is continuing” for the facility, with nearly all the drywall installed and the two restrooms completed and a few smaller projects left to finish, such as lighting repairs, fixtures and a handicap-accessible ramp in the back of the building.

“Things are falling in place quite well,” project manager Glenn Reed said. “We’re trying to preserve and incorporate as much of the old church as we can, so the pews will stay in there as seating.”

Funds dedicated to the renovations were running low for the project, so the town board approved the transfer of $7,271 associated with a recently received grant from the Justice Court Assistance Program of the State Unified Court System.

The courthouse will be moving from the old town hall building at the corner of Route 20 and Center Road.

When asked about what will happen with that building once the courthouse moves, officials said there are currently no plans for it.

Also during the meeting, the East Middle Road repair job was awarded to Sall-Tee & Sons Construction of Sheridan for $9,250. A large sinkhole has caused flooding and damage along the street there.

Two other bids were received by the town for the project: one from S. St. George Enterprises of Fredonia for $15,600 and H. Olsen & Sons Contractors of Forestville for $17,940.

The board approved $2,000 as a financial commitment to the County Department of Planning and Development’s local waterfront revitalization plan.

Highway Superintendent Jeffrey Feinen announced five signs on Newell Road were recently vandalized and garbage dumping is becoming a concern around the airport.

“We may be asking to put cameras out there in the future,” he said.

A brine truck was declared surplus by the board since Feinen announced it was not worth the repairs it needs. Feinen will sell it at an auction.

Town Clerk Julie Szumigala announced the town received a payment of franchise fees from Time Warner Cable and a royalties payment from Empire Energy for a gas well on the town farm, both at around $1,000 each.

Szumigala also announced the town’s exit liability would be $150,235 for the Department of Insurance.

The next regular meeting is April 17 at 7:30 p.m., with a workshop April 7 at 7 p.m. Two public hearings will precede the regular meeting: one at 7 p.m. for a proposed zoning ordinance amendment regarding signs in the industrial park and another at 7:15 p.m. for a proposed local law to allow purchasing by best value instead of solely the lowest cost.
